Often simply called liuto in 17th century Italian sources, this is probably the intended instrument for Piccinini, Melii, and most Italian music up to Zamboni using the old tuning. Typically the stringing is 7+7, with seven courses on the fingerboard and seven bass courses (octave pairs) going to the upper pegbox. Original instruments often have striped backs of alternate light/dark woods, and decorative stripes and marquetry. Attractive instruments can be made with less elaborate decoration.
