Piece of the Month - January 2002, revised 2008
Fantasia (1)
The first piece comes from Pietro Paolo Raimondo's Libro
de sonate diverse
(MS, Como, 1601; facsimile by A.M.I.S., Como, 1980). It will be
familiar to most people from its appearance (somewhat mangled) in
Robert Dowland's Varietie of Lute Lessons (1610),
where it is attributed to "the most famous and divine Laurencini of
Rome". It also appeared as Fantasia Laurenc in
Besard's Thesaurus Harmonicus (1603). However it
was first published in Vincenzo Galilei's Il Fronimo
(1584) where it is attributed to "BM", a Florentine gentleman who
contributed the two famous lute duet Contrapunti
to Galilei's book and also several pieces to the Siena lute book. The
Raimondo version is the only one with a decorative flourish at the end.
Fantasia (2)
The second piece comes from the Herold Lute Book (MS,
Padua,
1602; facsimile by Tree Edition, München, 1991) and has a
related
opening theme. It also appeared in Joachim van den Hove's Florida
sive cantiones..., 1601, f.6-6v., Fantasia septima.
It is based on the canzona La Spiritata from
Giovanni Gabrieli's Canzoni...Libro Primo
(Venice,1608).
