Piece of the Month - February 2002

Contrapunto primo - contrapunto secondo
These two duets for equal lutes by "B.M." come from Vincenzo Galilei's Il Fronimo (1584). They seem to have been composed for lute duet, unlike other contrapunti by Terzi (1593) where one lute plays an intabulation of a madrigal while the other plays a wide-ranging melodic improvisation. I have included "music-minus-one" MIDI files so you can play along with your computer.

D'amour me plains - sopra il medesimo di B.M.
Rogier Pathie's chanson D'amour me plains was a popular choice for intabulation, being set by Albert de Rippe, Benedict de Drusina, Julien Belin, Valentin Bakfark, Matthäus Waissel, Melchior Neusidler, and of course Anon. This version comes from the Siena lute book, where the intabulation is followed by a parody by B.M. The second piece seems to be missing four bars at the end.
