Piece of the Month - May 2002
Vestiva i colli
This anonymous setting from the Raimondo manuscript (f.82v.) is paired with a setting by Vincenzo Galilei (Il Fronimo, 1584, p.26) for comparison. It is unusual because whereas most arrangers (like Galilei) have intabulated the original five voice parts rather literally, this arranger seems to have "lutified" it, simplifying awkward chords, adding runs, and (not so good, this) ironing out some suspensions and nice harmonies. I have given you both settings separately, also together, as a score, so you can see more easily how they differ.
