Piece of the Month - December 2002

Fantasie by Pierino Fiorentino
Pierino or Perino was a Florentine lutenist who was a pupil of Francesco da Milano. Three of his fantasie were included in the Intabolatura de lauto di M.Francesco Milanese et M.Perino Fiorentino suo discipulo... Libro Terzo published in Venice by Gardane in 1547 (Brown 15472). This month's offering consists of two of the five pieces by him in the Siena Lute Book. The first (f.6) is a parody on an ensemble recercar by Julio [Segni] da Modena (from Musica Nova, 15403). The second (f.7v.) quotes ideas from Francesco, numbers 30 and 33/34 in the Ness edition. Both demonstrate his skill in composing contrapuntally for the lute.
