Piece of the Month - February 2004

Any suggestions, corrections or other comments will be most welcome: just email martin@luteshop.fsnet.co.uk. downloadable files are provided in Fronimo and Tab formats below. I may add PDF in the future. Any non-lutenists should note that the sound on this page bears little resemblance to a real lute and is played by a robot!

Fantasia
This anonymous fantasia is taken from the manuscript in the British Library known as the "Hirsch lute book" after a 20th century owner (MS Hirsch M 1353, f.65v.-66). This book, dating from around 1595, is unusual among English sources of the period in containing mostly fantasias and intabulations rather than the more usual Pavans and Galliards. There is so much interesting material in this book that I will be exploring it again next month.
