Piece of the Month - April 2004

Any suggestions, corrections or other comments will be most welcome: just email martin@luteshop.fsnet.co.uk. Downloadable files are provided in Fronimo and Tab formats below. I may add PDF in the future. Any non-lutenists should note that the sound on this page bears little resemblance to a real lute and is played by a robot!

Pass'e mezo - Gagliarda
I always thought that Molinaro's passamezze were rather too long and formulaic - but I never tried the ones in more remote keys. Now, inspired by Paul O'Dette's splendid recording (HMU 907295) I realize that some of them are really good pieces - if not easy to play. This one can be found on p.46 of Molinaro's book (Intavolatura di liuto, Venice, 1599). Bar 38 is editorial, as it is almost blank in the Florence copy and I don't have access to the others.

It should keep you busy for a while...
