Piece of the Month - August 2004

Any suggestions, corrections or other comments will be most welcome: just email martin@luteshop.co.uk. Downloadable files are provided in Fronimo and Tab formats below. I may add PDF in the future. Any non-lutenists should note that the sound on this page bears little resemblance to a real lute and is played by a robot!

Fantasia [Ut re mi]
This anonymous fantasia is from the Marsh lute book (p.234), which dates from around 1595. This manuscript includes several fantasias (more of which next month), some by Francesco da Milano and some which seem to be genuinely English, like this one in the "Ut re mi" genre. The density of the writing (especially in bars 38-40) recalls keyboard music, but it is all entirely playable on the lute and there are no known concordances in lute or keyboard sources.
